LPG Prices Increased: Government Highlights Indias Rates as Among the Lowest Globally Despite 46% Rise in Global Benchmark

The government announced that the cost of supplying a domestic LPG cylinder has increased to over ₹1,600. This rise in pricing is attributed to a significant surge in international LPG prices, which began following the onset of conflict in West Asia at the end of February 2023.

The escalation in prices is a result of various factors, including disruptions in supply chains and increased demand due to geopolitical tensions in the region. Historically, international oil prices can fluctuate dramatically during periods of conflict, impacting downstream costs for consumers.

In response to these developments, the government is closely monitoring the market and evaluating potential measures to mitigate the impact on consumers, especially low-income households that rely heavily on LPG for cooking and heating. The last adjustment in LPG prices for domestic consumers came earlier this year, reflecting ongoing global economic challenges and instability.
