Major Banks Report Increased Q2 Profits Despite Margin Pressure

In the second quarter of the fiscal year, several major Indian banks, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, have reported increased profits, despite facing challenges related to margin pressures.

HDFC Bank, one of the largest private sector banks in India, announced a profit of ₹16,811 crore for the quarter ending September 30, 2023. This figure represents a 20% increase compared to the same period last year. The bank attributed its growth to a robust increase in net interest income, which rose by 16% to ₹24,000 crore. However, the bank did experience a slight decline in its net interest margin, which fell to 3.8% from 4% in the previous quarter.

Similarly, ICICI Bank reported a profit of ₹9,648 crore, marking a 30% year-on-year growth. The banks net interest income also saw a significant rise, reaching ₹16,000 crore, although its net interest margin decreased slightly to 4.5%. The banks strong performance was driven by an increase in retail loans and a reduction in non-performing assets.

Axis Bank also posted impressive results, with a profit of ₹5,800 crore, which is a 30% increase from the previous year. The banks net interest income grew by 20% to ₹11,000 crore, while its net interest margin remained stable at around 3.5%. Axis Bank has focused on expanding its retail loan portfolio, which has contributed to its overall growth.

Kotak Mahindra Bank reported a profit of ₹3,300 crore for the quarter, reflecting a 25% increase compared to the same quarter last year. The banks net interest income rose by 15% to ₹5,500 crore, although its net interest margin decreased to 4.2%. Kotak has been actively managing its asset quality, which has helped maintain its profitability.

Despite the margin pressures faced by these banks, their ability to increase profits demonstrates resilience in the current economic environment. The banks have successfully navigated challenges by focusing on expanding their loan portfolios and improving asset quality. As the financial landscape continues to evolve, these institutions are well-positioned to adapt and thrive in the competitive banking sector.
