Mysuru Sugarcane Growers Welcome Approval for 100% Ethanol Fuel

In 2006, delegates at the South India Farmers’ Convention, which took place in Mysuru, passed a resolution advocating for the promotion of ethanol production from sugarcane. The resolution also called for the government to facilitate the use of ethanol as a fuel alternative.

This initiative highlights the growing emphasis on sustainable energy sources in India, particularly the utilization of biofuels derived from agricultural products. Ethanol, produced from the fermentation of sugarcane, presents potential benefits including reduced dependency on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and additional income streams for farmers involved in sugarcane cultivation.

Since 2006, the Indian government has sought to increase the blending of ethanol with petrol to enhance energy security and support the agricultural economy. Measures such as the National Biofuel Policy, implemented in 2018, aim to boost ethanol production targets and explore additional feedstocks for biofuel production, further positioning India towards a more sustainable energy future.
