New Corporations Face Ongoing Challenges

Eight months after the establishment of five new corporations in Bengaluru, which replaced the previously existing large civic body, a substantial change in governance structure has taken place. The number of electoral wards has increased significantly, rising from 198 to 369. This restructuring was intended to enhance local governance and bring administration closer to residents.

Chetan B.C. reviews whether this decentralization has effectively improved local governance and citizen engagement. The split aimed to facilitate better management of urban issues, improve responsiveness, and provide residents with a more accessible platform to voice their concerns. With nearly two and a half times the number of wards, questions remain about the efficiency of service delivery and community involvement in the new framework. Stakeholders and residents alike are keenly observing the changes as they consider the implications for civic engagement and the overall quality of life in Bengaluru.
