Niti Aayog Highlights Concerns Regarding Student Retention and Learning Outcomes in Recent Report

The Niti Aayog has released a report advocating for a new educational model termed “Cylindrical Schooling” to address the persistent issue of student dropouts in India, often referred to as the “leaky pipeline.” This approach proposes the establishment of composite schools that integrate all grades from 1 to 12 within a single institution.

The report highlights that the current educational structure often leads to high dropout rates as students transition between different schools at various educational stages. By consolidating grades within one facility, the initiative aims to provide a more cohesive and supportive learning environment. This model emphasizes continuous engagement, facilitating smoother progression through the educational system.

Cylindrical Schooling is designed to enhance educational outcomes by allowing for continuity in teaching methods, curricular integration, and teacher-student relationships. The Niti Aayog suggests that this approach could lead to improved retention rates, as students would benefit from consistent mentorship and educational resources throughout their formative years.

In India, dropout rates have been a significant challenge, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. The new model is part of broader efforts to reform the educational landscape in the country, aligning with the National Education Policys goals of enhancing access, equity, and quality in education.
