NMC to Cease PG Diploma Admissions Post 2026-27, Encourages Transition to MD and MS Programs

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has declared changes to its postgraduate medical education framework, indicating that admissions to postgraduate diploma courses will conclude after the 2026-27 academic year. In an effort to enhance the quality and standardization of medical education, the NMC has mandated that medical colleges convert existing postgraduate diploma seats into Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degree positions.

This decision aligns with national goals to ensure that medical professionals receive comprehensive training that meets evolving healthcare needs. The transition is expected to promote a higher level of specialization among practitioners and facilitate better healthcare delivery across the country.

The NMCs efforts to streamline postgraduate medical education come in response to concerns about the adequacy of training provided through diploma programs. This initiative is poised to reshape the landscape of medical education in India, encouraging more graduates to pursue higher degrees in line with international standards. Medical colleges are currently assessing their curriculums and infrastructure to accommodate this transition in the coming years.
