Piyush Goyal: India-UK FTA Should Focus on Transformational Growth Beyond Increased Trade

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called on businesses in India and the United Kingdom to pursue “transformational growth” in light of the anticipated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) set to take effect on July 15. Goyal underscored the importance of forging strategic partnerships to leverage opportunities that extend beyond small, incremental benefits, aiming for significant economic advancements.

Additionally, Goyal addressed the Double Contribution Convention, which is designed to support temporary workers and enhance their rights and contributions to both nations economies. He also expressed concern about the evaluations made by global rating agencies regarding Indias economic potential, urging a more nuanced understanding of the countrys capabilities.

The Free Trade Agreement, when implemented, is expected to bolster trade relations between India and the UK, reducing tariffs and facilitating market access, particularly in key sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. This development comes amid ongoing discussions on enhancing bilateral trade, currently valued at approximately $15 billion, with an objective to increase this figure significantly in the coming years.
