Potential Risks of Delimitation Resistance for Southern States
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently put forward a proposal to increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha by 50%. Under this plan, one-third of the expanded total would be specifically reserved for women, both at the national level and within each individual state.
For example, in Kerala, which currently has 20 Lok Sabha seats, the proposal suggests an increase to 30 seats. Of these 30 seats, 10 would be designated as reserved for women candidates. This initiative comes in response to ongoing discussions about enhancing female representation in Indian politics, where women are traditionally underrepresented.
The proposal aligns with broader efforts to promote gender equality and inclusion in governance. If implemented, this change could significantly alter the composition of the Lok Sabha, potentially affecting legislative priorities and discussions. The BJP has emphasized the importance of womens participation in decision-making processes and the need for laws that reflect and represent the diversity of the Indian population.
