Punjab Governor Approves Anti-Sacrilege Legislation

The Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, has been introduced with the objective of strengthening legal measures against acts of beadbi, or sacrilege, towards the Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious scripture of Sikhism. The bill outlines enhanced penalties aimed at discouraging such offenses and preserving the reverence associated with the scripture.

This legislative initiative comes amid ongoing concerns within the Sikh community regarding incidents that may undermine the sanctity of their holy text. The proposed amendments are designed to reinforce protections for the Guru Granth Sahib, which is not only a spiritual guide for Sikhs but also a symbol of their cultural identity.

Supporters of the bill argue that stricter legal repercussions are essential in fostering respect and safeguarding religious beliefs, while opponents may raise concerns about freedom of expression and the potential for misuse of the law. The bill is currently under review, and discussions are expected to take place in the legislative assembly regarding its implications and enforcement.
