Rahul Gandhi Seeks Approval for Upcoming Visit to Great Nicobar

The Union government is set to initiate a ₹92,000-crore infrastructure development project in Great Nicobar Island, aiming to enhance the regions connectivity and economic potential. However, this initiative has raised significant concerns among local tribal communities regarding potential displacement and the preservation of their ancestral rights to the forest land.

Great Nicobar Island, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory, is home to several indigenous tribes, including the Nicobarese and Shompens. These communities have expressed apprehensions that the large-scale development could infringe upon their traditional livelihoods and disrupt their socio-cultural practices.

Government officials have stated that the project is designed to boost tourism, improve transportation infrastructure, and promote overall development in the region. They have indicated that measures will be taken to ensure that local communities are consulted and their rights acknowledged during the planning and execution of the project.
