Research Scholar Explores Keralas Hand-Painted Political Graffiti in Study on Type Designing

Neetha Joseph K, a doctoral researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, has published a research paper entitled “The Visual Voices of Kerala’s Politics,” in which she examines the nuances of hand-painted political graffiti across Kerala. The study highlights the stylistic variations of Malayalam fonts used in these artworks, surveying samples from eight districts in the state.

Kerala, known for its vibrant political culture and active citizen engagement, has a rich tradition of using graffiti as a medium for political expression. This research is significant in understanding how local art reflects political sentiments and identities, as well as the linguistic variations that emerge in different regions. Josephs work not only contributes to the fields of political science and art history but also provides insight into the regional dynamics of Keralas socio-political landscape. The findings may offer a deeper understanding of how visual language shapes public discourse and influences community perspectives.
