Sophie Adenot Completes Her First Spacewalk

### Successful Spacewalk Completed by Astronaut Sophie Adenot

On October 23, 2023, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot successfully completed her first spacewalk aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This significant milestone marks her as the first female French astronaut to engage in an extravehicular activity, an important achievement for both Adenot and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Adenot and NASA astronaut Anil Menon conducted the spacewalk to address issues with the ISSs high-speed communications antenna. During their mission, the astronauts were able to remove the faulty antenna. However, due to time constraints and operational challenges, they were unable to install a replacement antenna.

The planned installation was a critical task, as the antenna is vital for maintaining high-speed data transmission between the ISS and ground control. The astronauts had begun their operations at 8:56 a.m. EDT and spent approximately 7 hours outside the ISS.

The mission was part of ongoing efforts to maintain the aging infrastructure of the ISS, which has been continuously inhabited since 2000. The ISS program is a collaborative project, involving multiple space agencies including NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, JAXA, and CSA, working together to advance scientific research in microgravity.

Spacewalks, while always a success in completing specific objectives, can encounter unexpected challenges, as seen during this operation. Future plans will likely include additional spacewalks to replace the antenna, ensuring continuous communications for the ISS operations.
