Tamil Nadu Increases Minimum Auto Fare to 50

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a significant increase in the minimum auto fare, raising it from ₹25 to ₹50. This decision, which aims to address rising operational costs for auto-rickshaw drivers, was made official on Wednesday. The new fare structure will come into effect from October 1, 2023.

In addition to the minimum fare increase, the government has also revised the fare for the first kilometer, which will now be set at ₹50. Following this, the fare will be ₹20 for every subsequent kilometer. The previous fare structure had not been updated for several years, and the government acknowledged that the hike was necessary due to inflation and the increasing cost of fuel and maintenance.

Transport Minister S. S. Sivasankar stated that the decision was made after consultations with various stakeholders, including auto-rickshaw unions and drivers. He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring fair compensation for drivers while also considering the affordability for passengers.

The announcement has received mixed reactions from the public. While some passengers express concern over the increased costs, many auto drivers have welcomed the fare hike, stating that it will help them cope with their rising expenses. The government has assured that it will monitor the situation closely and make adjustments if necessary to balance the interests of both drivers and passengers.

This fare increase is part of a broader initiative by the Tamil Nadu government to improve transportation services in the state. Authorities are also exploring other measures to enhance the overall experience for commuters, including better regulation of auto-rickshaw services and improved safety measures.

As the new fare structure takes effect, both drivers and passengers will need to adapt to the changes. The government hopes that this adjustment will lead to a more sustainable and efficient transportation system in Tamil Nadu.
