Telangana Requests Polavaram Authority to Halt A.P. from Proceeding with FRL Projects

The Election Commission of Telangana (ECT) has officially addressed a letter to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA), expressing concerns regarding the ongoing phase-two works of the Polavaram irrigation project. The ECT has highlighted that proceeding with these works without implementing adequate protective measures for areas at risk of submergence in Telangana could lead to significant damage.

The Polavaram Project, a major multi-purpose irrigation scheme on the Godavari River, aims to provide irrigation benefits, hydropower generation, and flood control. However, the project has faced criticism and challenges due to its potential impact on surrounding regions, including displacement of local communities and environmental concerns.

The ECTs communication reflects the need for a thorough assessment of the risks associated with the projects second phase, particularly in light of rising water levels that could exacerbate flooding in vulnerable areas. Stakeholders are urged to evaluate the necessary safeguards to protect affected populations and ecosystems.

The situation underscores the ongoing dialogue among various stakeholders, including regional governments, environmental groups, and engineering authorities, as they seek a balance between developmental aspirations and the preservation of local environments and communities.
