Trump Advocates for U.S. Control Over Greenland at NATO Summit

During a recent NATO summit, former President Donald Trump reiterated his view that the United States should have control over Greenland, a territory currently governed by Denmark. Trumps comments come amid heightened interest in Greenland due to its strategic location and potential natural resources, particularly in light of climate change.

At the summit, Trump stated that Greenland is “very important for the U.S., but not important for Denmark,” highlighting his long-standing belief that the U.S. should pursue ownership or greater influence over the large island. Previously, in 2019, Trump famously attempted to purchase Greenland, a proposal that was met with significant backlash from the Danish government.

Denmarks Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, reaffirmed her governments stance, stating that Greenland is “not for sale” and emphasized its status as an autonomous territory. Greenland has gained attention not only from the U.S. but also from Russia and China, as melting ice reveals new shipping routes and untapped mineral resources.

Military experts note that control over Greenland could provide the U.S. with a strategic advantage in the Arctic region, especially as geopolitical tensions rise. The U.S. has maintained a military presence in Greenland for decades, operating Thule Air Base, which plays a key role in missile warning and space operations.
