Rajnath Singh Announces ₹3,500 Crore Defence Initiative in West Bengal

On August 23, 2023, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation for five significant expansion projects in West Bengal, enhancing the states shipbuilding capabilities with an investment of ₹3,500 crore. These projects will be executed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited, both key players in Indias defence manufacturing sector.

The announcement is part of Indias broader strategy to bolster indigenous military production and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, as emphasized by Singh during the ceremony. He highlighted the importance of self-reliance in defence manufacturing, particularly in the construction of warships and offshore vessels, which are essential for national security.

The expansion projects are expected to create job opportunities and boost the local economy while positioning India as a competitive player in the global naval market. This initiative is aligned with the Make in India campaign, which seeks to encourage manufacturers to produce products in the country.

Additionally, Singh pointed out the “global vacuum” that India should aim to fill in shipbuilding due to shifting geopolitical dynamics.
