WFI Rejects Vineshs Proposal for Comeback
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) recently issued a statement accusing Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat of breaching United World Wrestling (UWW) regulations during the weight trials held in March 2024. According to the WFI, Phogat participated in competitions for two different weight categories, 50kg and 53kg, despite rules that typically allow athletes to compete in only one weight class.
These trials were organized by an ad-hoc committee due to the fact that the WFI was not recognized by the Government of India at the time, raising questions about the legitimacy of the event. The conflict has sparked discussions within the wrestling community about compliance with international regulations and the implications for athletes representing India on a global stage.
The UWW, the international governing body for the sport of wrestling, enforces strict regulations regarding athlete participation in weight categories to maintain fairness and safety during competitions. The outcome of this situation may affect Phogats future participation in events, including the upcoming Olympics.
