Government to Introduce New Indices for Monitoring Informal Manufacturing and Services Sectors

The Indian government is in the process of developing new indices aimed at measuring production within the industrial and service sectors of the informal economy. This initiative seeks to enhance the understanding of the unorganized sector, which has traditionally been evaluated through proxy methods that may have yielded distorted data, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These new indices will be based on comprehensive surveys to gather more accurate data about the informal economy, which is estimated to employ a significant portion of Indias workforce. By providing a clearer picture of this sector, the government hopes to improve policymaking and resource allocation for the millions of individuals and families that rely on informal employment for their livelihoods.

The informal economy plays a crucial role in Indias overall economic structure, contributing significantly to GDP and serving as a key source of income for many workers, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The development of these indices reflects the governments recognition of the importance of this sector and its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by those engaged in informal work. Enhanced data collection and measurement are expected to inform targeted intervention strategies and support the creation of a more robust framework for economic growth.
