Assam Schools Encounter Dual Challenges: Over 32,000 with Enrollment Below 30 Students and 60,000 Teacher Positions Unfilled

Schools in Assam are currently facing significant challenges, with a notable decline in student enrollment and a substantial number of vacant teaching positions. Official statistics indicate that approximately 32,321 schools have fewer than 30 students each, while over 60,000 teacher positions remain unfilled statewide.

In response to these issues, nearly 25,000 educational institutions have applied for provincialisation, which involves formal recognition and support from the government. The lack of adequate staffing has led to concerns regarding the student-teacher ratio, ultimately affecting the quality of education in many classrooms across the region.

In recognition of these pressing concerns, the Assam government has initiated efforts to address the teacher shortages and improve the overall educational ecosystem. This includes proposals to expedite hiring processes and implement plans for resource allocation to bolster schools struggling with low enrollment and insufficient faculty. The governments ongoing commitment aims to ensure that students receive a quality learning experience despite the current challenges.
