Eight wildlife sanctuaries and 281 reserve forests in Assam reported as encroached.

In a recent address to the Assembly, Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced that significant progress has been made in addressing land encroachment issues. As of February 12, 2016, more than 25,588 hectares have been cleared from an estimated 315,997 hectares of forest land that was under encroachment.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the state government to protect forest resources and biodiversity. Encroachment has been a persistent issue affecting forest areas, contributing to habitat loss and environmental degradation. The governments ongoing efforts aim to restore these areas and enhance conservation measures.

The Minister emphasized the importance of sustainable management of forest lands and reiterated the governments commitment to preventing future encroachments. Enhanced monitoring and stricter enforcement of existing laws are expected to play a crucial role in these efforts moving forward. The state continues to work with local communities and stakeholders to promote awareness and engage in conservation practices.
