First Services Production Index Released; 14 of 19 Sub-sectors Show Double-Digit Growth
The Indian government has unveiled a new Index of Services Production aimed at measuring the performance of various service sectors within the economy. In its inaugural release for April, the index revealed that fourteen out of nineteen formal services sub-sectors experienced double-digit growth, indicating a robust expansion in the sector. Notably, accommodation and food services emerged as the strongest performers, significantly contributing to the overall growth figures.
Conversely, the air and railway transport sub-sectors were the only areas to report declines during this period. This new index will be published on a monthly basis, providing a valuable tool for policymakers and economists to monitor service sector trends and assess economic activity more effectively.
The introduction of the Index of Services Production comes at a time when the Indian economy is showing signs of recovery and resilience, particularly in the services sector, which plays a crucial role in the countrys GDP. Analysts believe that ongoing investments and policy support will continue to foster growth in this important area.
