Government cites data for 230 million vehicles in E20 petrol debate, states no verified evidence of widespread engine failures.

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, emphasized that the transition to E20 fuel, which consists of 20% ethanol blended with gasoline, has been implemented in a “phased, calibrated, and evidence-based” manner. He highlighted that the ethanol blending rate has steadily increased from 1.53% in the fiscal year 2013-14 to the target of 20% by the 2025-26 fiscal year. Gopi noted that this incremental adjustment has been guided by scientific evaluations and consultations with stakeholders at each stage, ensuring that the process aligns with both environmental goals and the needs of the automotive industry.

The E20 fuel initiative is part of Indias broader strategy to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The government aims to promote the use of renewable energy sources and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol, which is primarily derived from sugarcane, maize, and other biomass, is seen as a sustainable alternative that can also boost agricultural income for farmers. As the country works towards its commitment to Paris Agreement targets, the increased utilization of biofuels such as ethanol is expected to play a crucial role in achieving a more sustainable energy future.
