Increase in Lightning-Related Fatalities Observed

According to recent state-wise data analysis, a significant majority of lightning-related fatalities have occurred in non-peninsular states, which include regions located outside the main peninsular area of India.

The report indicates that states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh are among the hardest hit, demonstrating an alarming trend in lightning incidents during the monsoon seasons. These non-peninsular states often experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms, which are conducive to lightning strikes.

In response to these concerning figures, state governments and meteorological departments are urged to enhance their lightning safety awareness initiatives and improve forecasting and early warning systems. As lightning can strike suddenly and with severe consequences, public education on safety measures during storms is important for reducing casualties.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), lightning strikes are most prevalent during the monsoon months, and rural areas are particularly vulnerable due to less access to real-time weather updates and safety information. Efforts to mitigate the risk include the installation of lightning rods and the implementation of community outreach programs focused on storm preparedness.
