KSEBs Summer Plan Faces Scrutiny from Regulatory Panel

The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) conducted a public hearing to discuss the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) proposal for power purchases through the term ahead market. During the hearing, KSERC expressed significant concerns regarding KSEBs management of excess daytime power, suggesting that the board could have mitigated this issue by prioritizing the implementation of battery energy storage systems.

KSERC highlighted the importance of such systems in enhancing the states energy resilience, particularly during peak demand periods. Furthermore, the commission criticized KSEB for not establishing adequate power swap agreements with neighboring states, which could have provided additional support in meeting heightened summer electricity demands.

These observations come as Kerala prepares for the upcoming summer season, where electricity consumption typically surges due to increased usage of air conditioning and other cooling systems. The commissions comments call attention to the need for improved strategic planning and infrastructure development within KSEB to ensure reliability and efficiency in energy supply.
