Maharashtra Onion Farmers Seek ₹3,000 per Quintal Amid Concerns Over Insufficient Relief Measures

Farmers in Maharashtra have expressed a positive response to the state governments decision to relax onion procurement rules. However, they are calling for a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 3,000 per quintal. Currently, the prevailing market rate is approximately Rs 1,580 per quintal, which farmers argue is insufficient to cover their production costs.

The farmers emphasize the need for transparent procurement processes and are seeking compensation for historical losses incurred due to fluctuating market prices. They contend that merely changing procurement regulations will not adequately address their ongoing financial challenges.

Onions are a crucial crop in Maharashtra, often contributing significantly to the states agricultural economy. The government’s adjustments to procurement rules are part of broader efforts to stabilize prices and support farmers’ income amidst ongoing concerns about agricultural sustainability and profitability. The farmers are urging government authorities to consider their demands seriously to ensure they can maintain their livelihoods.
