RSS Economic Wing Advocates for a Stronger Rupee, Differing from Arvind Panagariyas Recommendations
The chairman of the SJM (Swadeshi Jagran Manch), a prominent economic advocacy group, has urged the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to intervene in order to stabilize the Indian rupee, recommending that it should prevent the currency from surpassing the psychologically significant threshold of ₹100 per US dollar. He expressed concerns that continued depreciation of the rupee could negatively impact Indias global standing and economic stability.
He advocated for protective measures to bolster domestic industries, suggesting that such actions would enhance the countrys economic resilience. The depreciation of the rupee has been a topic of concern for many economists, as it can lead to increased import costs, higher inflation, and potential challenges for the trade deficit.
As of October 2023, the rupee has faced various pressures, including shifts in global economic conditions, inflation rates, and changes in foreign investment trends. Economists often debate the implications of currency fluctuations on the economy, weighing the benefits of a weaker currency, such as increased export competitiveness, against the risks of imported inflation and reduced consumer purchasing power.
The RBI has historically taken measures to stabilize the currency and may consider a range of monetary policies to address these concerns, balancing between supporting the rupee and fostering economic growth.
