State Procures 9.57 LT of Maize; Government Plans to Also Purchase Jowar
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has appealed to the Central Government to increase the procurement rates for Bengal gram and groundnut from the current 25% to a minimum of 50% of the total production. This request aims to ensure better financial support for farmers and stabilize market prices for these essential crops.
Bengal gram and groundnut are significant components of Indias agricultural economy, contributing to both food security and rural livelihoods. The current procurement levels have raised concerns among farmers regarding potential losses due to fluctuating market prices, particularly during times of surplus production.
In light of these issues, Minister Raos proposal seeks to bolster the agricultural sector by providing farmers with a more secure pricing mechanism and reducing the volatility that can arise from dependence on market forces alone. Enhanced procurement could also lead to increased investments in agricultural infrastructure and promote sustainable farming practices.
The Minister’s call reflects a growing sentiment among agricultural stakeholders for a more supportive and systematic approach to crop procurement, especially as India aims to achieve greater self-sufficiency and enhance the income of smallholder farmers.
